My Computer is Slow - What Can I Do?

Why is My Computer Slow?

A slow computer is frustrating, but don't worry - there are lots of simple things you can try to speed it up. Most of the time, it's something easy to fix.

Quick Fixes (Try These First)

1. Turn It Off and On Again

This might sound silly, but it really works! Sometimes your computer just needs a rest. Turn it off completely, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on. This clears out temporary problems.

2. Close Programs You're Not Using

If you have lots of programs open at once, your computer has to work harder. Close the ones you're not using - especially web browsers with lots of tabs open.

How to close programs: Look at the bottom of your screen (the taskbar). Right-click on programs you're not using and click "Close" or "Exit".

3. Restart Your Internet Browser

If only your internet is slow, try closing your browser completely and opening it again. Too many tabs can slow things down.

Medium Fixes (A Bit More Involved)

4. Check Your Internet Connection

Sometimes it's not your computer - it's your internet. Try:

  • Unplugging your router (the box that gives you internet) for 30 seconds, then plugging it back in
  • Moving closer to your router if you're using Wi-Fi
  • Checking if other devices in your house have the same problem

5. Delete Things You Don't Need

Your computer might be full of old files, photos, and programs you don't use anymore. Deleting these can free up space and speed things up.

What to delete:

  • Old photos you've already backed up
  • Downloads you don't need anymore
  • Programs you never use
  • Old documents you don't need

Be careful: Only delete things you're sure you don't need. If you're not sure, give us a call and we can help.

6. Update Your Computer

Sometimes your computer needs updates to work properly. These updates fix problems and can make your computer faster.

How to update:

  • Windows: Click the Start button, type "Update", and click "Check for updates"
  • Mac: Click the Apple menu, then "System Preferences", then "Software Update"

This might take a while, so be patient. Your computer might restart during the update.

When to Call for Help

If you've tried these things and your computer is still slow, it might be:

  • A virus or malware (harmful software)
  • Hardware problems (something physically wrong with your computer)
  • Needs a professional clean-up
